Kathmandu: In a rare phenomenon, parts of
Kathmandu valley today received light snowfall forcing people
to remain indoors as the temperature fell below zero.

Hills surrounding Kathmandu valley including Nagarjun,
Nagarkot, Shivapuri and Chandragiri received snowfall due to
westerly wind, according to Department of Meteorology.

Lower regions of the valley including Changunarayan,
Thali, Mulpanbi and Chabahil also received traces of snowfall,
according to officials. The temperature in Kathmandu has gone
down to slightly below zero.

"Mountains like Chandragiri, Nagarjun and Nagarkot are
experiencing traces of snowfall with the rise in westerly
winds," said Maniratna Shakya, Chief of Meteorological
Forecasting Division.

"If the rain continues till this evening, more snow
showers are possible," Shakya was quoted by Kantipur as
saying. In Kathmandu city light rainfall occurred in the
afternoon. People remained indoors due to drastic fall in the
temperature.

"If the rain continues till night, more snow showers
are possible," Shakya said. He said that Kathmandu will
experience cold days ahead.

But there is no possibility of heavy rain in the
valley, he added. However, mountainous districts such as
Humla, Shankhuwashaba, Gorkha, Mustang and Lamjung already
witnessed heavy snow fall Sunday.

The last time Kathmandu experienced snowfall was in
February, 2007.
