Karachi: A senior PPP lawmaker on Friday escaped unhurt when unidentified assailants threw hand grenades at his vehicle in a troubled area of Pakistan`s gang-war hit commercial capital.
Nabil Gabol, who is member of Pakistan`s National Assembly, was targeted while travelling through the Lyari area of Karachi, along with his aides.
"Hand grenade was thrown at my car but it exploded prematurely. I am fine but this is an attack on me (is) by people in Lyari who are against democracy and involved in the gang war," he said.
Law enforcement agencies have been carrying out operations in some parts of the Lyari area since yesterday.
According to police three people, including two policemen, have been killed and several injured in the violence since yesterday.
"There is regular exchange of gunfire between the police and para-military Frontier Constabulary (FC) and the criminal elements involved in the gang wars in the area," a rescue official said.
Law enforcement forces arrested 20 suspects during the targeted operation in Lyari.
Unidentified men also threw hand grenades and fired rockets at police forces during the operation, injuring policemen and civilians.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Crime Investigation Department (CID) Chaudhry Aslam Khan, along with a heavy contingent of police and FC entered Lyari at 5 am.
By the time it reached Cheel Chawk, the contingent had been attacked by six rockets and one hand grenade, injuring a police officer.
According to sources, the operation was being conducted in search of around 30 wanted criminals including Baba Ladla, a criminal with a bounty of Rs 2 million on his head.
Earlier yesterday, Pakistan Peoples Party`s Lyari worker and Sindh Council member Malik Mohammed Khan was killed by unidentified men.
