Sydney: Australia, who fell to an ignominious 10th position in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Twenty20 rankings after its consecutive loss to Pakistan in the UAE series, is now pondering hard over the right combination for the final match, in order to avoid a whitewash.
All-rounder Glenn Maxwell is pressing hard for a recall in the final T20 match, after impressing in the one-day games since making his debut against Afghanistan last month. Maxwell was dropped after making four runs and taking 0-25 off two overs on his T20 International debut in game one against Pakistan in Dubai last Wednesday. The Victorian could take the place of fellow all-rounder Dan Christian, although middle-order batsman David Hussey, who also bowls some handy off-spin, is another candidate to make way. George Bailey’s men have suffered the humiliation of dropping even below the semi-professional Ireland side in the T20 rankings, although victory against Pakistan would allow Australia to improve one spot. Australia’s first game in the Twenty20 World Cup, which starts next week, is against Ireland on September 19 in Colombo, and the men from Down Under would be looking to carry momentum with a win in the final match.
