Colombo: Parents of slain LTTE supremo
Velupillai Prabhakaran and relatives of any other rebel
leaders living in the government relief camps are not being
ill-treated, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said.
"Prabhakaran's parents, former LTTE leader Tamilchelvam's
wife, and close relatives of high rankers of the LTTE are
among the IDPs. Our security forces personnel help them," the
President said.
Denying earlier reports that Prabhakaran's parents were
being ill-treated in Wanni relief camp, Rajapaksa said that
his government was looking after nearly 300,000 IDPs "in a
cordial and friendly way".
"Though some narrow minded politicians try to tarnish the
image of the country," he said, adding, "We never punish a
father considering the brutality of the son. Therefore we look
after even Prabhakaran's parents".
In the near future people will enjoy the benefits of
massive development projects that are taking place in every
corner of the country, Rajapaksa told a gathering in Hakmana
yesterday.
Hakmana town in central Sri Lanka has been reconstructed
with an expenditure of Rs 554 million and consequently, many
development activities have begun, he said.
The city has been provided 440 marketing stalls as a part
of the Rs 5,540 million southern development drive initiated
by the government, he said.
