Islamabad: A police guard who gunned down
Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer in January had specifically
asked to be assigned to the politician`s security detail on
the day of the assassination, a witness told a Pakistani
anti-terrorism court today.
Three prosecution witnesses, all policemen, recorded
their statements during an in-camera hearing of the court held
in the heavily guarded Adiala Jail of Rawalpindi, where the
accused is currently being held.
One of the witnesses told the court that police guard
Mumtaz Qadri asked to be assigned to Taseer`s security detail,
media reports said.
Qadri has been charged with terrorism and murdering
Taseer in Islamabad on January 4.
Qadri has confessed to killing Taseer, saying he was
angered by the politician`s opposition to the controversial
After recording the testimony of the witnesses, the
judge adjourned the case till April 2.
Qadri was deployed to protect Taseer despite being
declared a "security risk" by a senior police official several
years ago due to his extremist leanings.
Over 100 people gathered outside Adiala Jail and
shouted slogans in support of Qadri.
