Red Cross to remain in Afghanistan after US leaves

The head of the International Red Cross says the agency is planning to keep up its large aid operation in Afghanistan when US troops start to withdraw.

Geneva: The head of the International Red
Cross says the agency is planning to keep up its large aid
operation in Afghanistan when US troops start to withdraw.
ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger says it is too early to
say if the Red Cross will scale up its activities in
Afghanistan but that it wouldn`t be responsible to plan for a
decrease.
President Barack Obama wants to start pulling out troops
in July 2011 if conditions allow.

Violence has soared over recent weeks, including a
suicide bomb attack on a US convoy in Kabul yesterday that
killed 18 people and a militant attack on the US-run Bagram
Air Field today that left one dead.

Kellenberger said today he sees no improvement in the
humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.
