Colombo: Sri Lanka's former Army Chief Gen
Sarath Fonseka, currently under military custody, has decided
to continue his fast despite being provided a telephone to
speak to his daughters.
Daily Mirror quoted Fonseka's wife Anoma as saying
that her husband had rejected the telephone provided by the
army as he insisted that he would speak to his two daughters,
settled abroad, only through her phone.
"He is continuing his fast. He will withdraw the fast
only if he is allowed to speak to our children through my
mobile phone. He does not trust anyone," it said.
Fonseka, who unsuccessfully contested the January 26
Presidential Polls, had yesterday launched a fast demanding
that he be allowed to talk to his daughters over phone.
The army said following a request made to the
authorities, the military had given Fonseka the privilege of
speaking to his daughters over a mobile phone, the report
said.
He is under army custody after being detained for
allegedly planning a coup against the government while he was
in service.
"The army insisted that this was an additional
privilege provided to the General (retd) as there was no
court order asking the military to facilitate calls between
Fonseka and his daughters," it said.
