At least 22 people were killed and hundred others injured after a severe tropical storm ripped through Dhaka and northwestern region in Bangladesh overnight, leaving a trail of destruction in several areas.

The nor'wester, a weather pattern that develops in the Bay of Bengal during the summer, hit the country last night ravaging several houses uprooting trees and bringing down electricity lines.

Most of the victims died after they were buried under collapsed houses and trees while some were electrocuted by electrical wires from fallen poles.

Bogra district, 197 km from capital Dhaka, was worst hit as 19 people were killed in the storm, according to police and fire officials.

About 100 people have been injured in the storm and admitted to different hospitals, Deputy Commissioner of Bogra Shafiqur Rahman said.

Fire service officials said two of the victims died in Dhaka as a wall collapsed in Mirpur during the storm, killing a woman and her six-month old baby.

Another person drowned in Jamuna River in Jamalpur after a boat capsized during the storm.
