Islamabad: Former Prime Minister Nawaz
Sharif was on Wednesday elected unopposed as the president of
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the country`s main
opposition party.
Sharif, 61, was elected at the PML-N`s General Council
meeting held here, said Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Head of party`s
Election Committee.
Outgoing acting PML-N president Javed Hashmi had
proposed the name of Sharif while Party Chairman Raja
Zafar-ul-Haq supported the nomination, state-run APP news
agency reported.
The General Council of PML-N also approved the
amendments in the party constitution.
Sharif served as 12th Prime Minister of Pakistan in
two non-consecutive terms from November 1990 to July 1993 and
February 1997 to October 1999.
He was ousted in an October 1999 military coup by the
then army chief Gen Pervez Musharraf. He returned to Pakistan
in late 2007 after eight years of forced exile.
