Sobhraj`s wife, mom-in-law freed from police custody

The wife and mother-in-law of Indian-origin `bikini killer` Charles Sobhraj were on Thursday released from police custody.

Kathmandu: The wife and mother-in-law of
Indian-origin `bikini killer` Charles Sobhraj were on Thursday
released from police custody, a day after they were detained
on contempt charges following their outburst against the
Supreme Court verdict upholding life term of the wily criminal
in a 1975 murder case.

22-year-old Nihita Bishwas and her mother Shakuntala
Thapa, who is also Sobhraj`s lawyer, were freed by the apex
court after they furnished their explanation before it on
contempt charges.

The mother-daughter duo were then handed over to the
Supreme Court Bar Association on the condition that they would
be present in the court tomorrow when the hearing resumes, a
senior official at the apex court said. Members of the Nepal
Bar Association were also present at the court.

Nihita and her mother had appeared before the court
yesterday also following which they were sent to police
custody for interrogation.

They had been summoned by the court on charges of using
"abusive" language against the judges who delivered the final
verdict upholding the life imprisonment awarded to Sobhraj by
lower courts for the murder of an American woman tourist here
35 years ago.

Both Nihita and her mother had accused the judges of
accepting bribe.

A division bench of justices Balaram KC and Ram Kumar
Prasad Shah had asked them on Sunday last to furnish
explanation to the court on the charges of contempt within
three days.
