Sri Lanka calls for protection of civilians in Libya

Sri Lanka on Teusday called for restraint to ensure the safety of civilians in Libya.

Colombo: Sri Lanka on Teusday called for
restraint to ensure the safety of civilians in Libya following
three days of intense air strike in the North African nation
by the US-led western coalition.

"The issue of protection of the civilian population in
Libya remains a concern for Sri Lanka", an External Affairs
Ministry release said.

Sri Lanka said the adoption of UNSC resolution 1973
must necessarily be linked to the objective of protecting
civilians and civilian populated areas.

The ministry release came as Alavi Moulana, the
governor of Western Province, plans to hold a protest
demonstration in the capital Colombo on Friday against the
Western aggression in Libya.

He told reporters yesterday that air strikes on Libya
must be condemned.

National Freedom Front, another government ally, said
the Western nations are attacking Libya to plunder its oil
reserves and therefore deserves condemnation.
