Colombo: In the wake of reports that the US was trying to support detained former Army chief Gen Sarath Fonseka, Sri Lanka on Sunday said it does not believe that Washington aimed at destabilising the Rajapaksa government.
After a meeting with US Ambassador Patricia Butenis, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said Sri Lanka looked forward to further strengthening of relations with Washington.

"The Sri Lanka authorities do not give any credence to the palpable misinformation concerning alleged moves involving the United States, aimed at undermining the leadership of President Rajapaksa, and destabilising his Government," Bogollagama told Butenis.

Among the matters discussed were reports inimical to the bilateral relationship carried by some sections of the Sri Lanka media, a Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry statement said.

"The United States maintains that no room should be left for the creation of impressions that this reportage has any support extended by official sources," it said after the meeting.
