Sri Lanka offers prayers to ward off 'conspiracy'

Colombo: With a US-backed resolution targeting Sri Lanka's rights record likely to be taken up at a UNHRC meet in Geneva, the government here on Wednesday organised Buddhist religious prayers aimed at defeating the alleged international conspiracy against the country.

"We have organised simultaneous 'adhistana poojas' (prayers of determination) today at most leading Buddhist temples," Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Deputy Finance Minister, said.

Prayers coincided with the 'poya day', the monthly holy day for the majority Buddhists.

"We will face the international challenge with determination," Siyambalapitiya said, referring to a crucial resolution seeking inquiry into allegations of war crimes in Sri Lanka during the LTTE war, which is expected to be moved by the US at the ongoing UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session later this month in Geneva.

The move is being seen as the manifestation of international frustration over Sri Lankan government's unwillingness to achieve national reconciliation with the the minority Tamils.

However, the government has dubbed the move as an "international conspiracy" to undermine Sri Lanka at the behest of the pro-LTTE diaspora.

There was a report last week that Mahinda`s astrologers had advised him that he has a bad spell until August and that only applying a Lion`s oil will save him. For this purpose lion oil was procured from Mozambique.

When the Maha Nayake Theros came forward to defend our War Hero General Fonseka, they were threatened. Now the same corrupt Regime bow down and ask for prayers to save them. Look at the demonstrations organised by the stupid Regime. They are protesting against the findings of their own commission of inquiry (LLRC). What a joke, these protests are free from politicised Police and Kangaroo Courts. Doesn’t this prove that our peaceful democratic Sri Lanka is turned into a corrupt lawless Banana Republic?

he SL President offered similar prayers to the Gods after the massmurder of Tamil people in the Wanni to the beat of drums and heady sounds of cobra flutes amidst chants by buddhist priests in celebration! Time for accountability has finally arrived in Geneva for the 52 contingent SL High Level Team in the salubrious Swiss city at a top hotel overlooking lake Geneva! What a bloodlust shambles has befallen the country by Leaders who are in a state of complete denial. It is time the rest of teh w orld knogets to know the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Hope the 47 delegates will honour truth and not guile.

Instead of fooling the masses, the Govt should clean up their mess. Apart from UNHCR demands, the country is plagued with human rights violations and abuses, corruption & nepotism, absolute waste in tamashas, etc. Even the current delegation to Geneva (52 bums) speaks volumes of absolute stupidy & waste by our stupid & arrogant politicians.

Totally agree and MR govt is hiding behind the lion flag when they get exposed. Let alone our LLRC, govt does not arrest a murderer who committed murder in broad daylight ? I close my case!
