Colombo: Sri Lanka is ready for the upcoming
session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva with an impressive record of post-war reconciliation, rehabilitation and resettlement efforts, a top official said Tuesday.
Mohan Peiris, legal advisor to the Cabinet said that
Sri Lanka has taken action at the highest level to implement
the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC)
recommendations.
Peiris` comments came as the US conveyed to the
government here last week that Washington was planning to back
a resolution against Sri Lanka over the LLRC recommendations.
Sri Lanka has already expressed confidence of
tackling the motion to the country`s advantage at the session
which is scheduled to get underway on February 27.
Peiris said LLRC recommendations are being systematically
implemented under two high-level committees appointed by
President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
"Nobody can point fingers at Sri Lanka with reason
that there was reluctance as such on the part of the
government to implement LLRC recommendations."
Sri Lanka would also dwell on the action to introduce a
human rights action plan which is aimed at putting into place
further rights safeguards.
Sri Lanka`s rights record during the last phase of
the military conflict with the LTTE, which ended in May 2009,
has been under intense international focus.
A special panel report of the UN Secretary General
Ban Ki-moon issued in April last year called for an
independent investigation on alleged war crimes committed by
both the government troops and the LTTE.
