Colombo: A countrywide appeal was issued in Sri Lanka to seek new homes for thousands of children orphaned during the nation's three decade long civil war.

Sri Lanka's National Child Protection Authority has sought help of the public to find new homes for the children, victims of war.

Initially the programme was started in Mullativu and Kilinochchi districts where the final phase of the war with Tamil Tigers took place.

"There are almost 1100 children in those two districts alone who have lost both parents or either one of the parents, and are currently under the care of relatives," the government announced.

The NCPA aims at establishing a guardianship system for these children, the body's chairperson Anoma Dissanayaka said.

"Therefore, any person can assist in raising these children."

The NCPA expects to receive at least Rs 1,500 for children under the age of 10 and Rs 2,000 for children over 10 years.
