Colombo: Sri Lanka will impose a ban to prevent a controversial anti-Islam film from being aired in the country after widespread protests across the Muslim world.

The religious affairs ministry said today that every possible step will be taken to prevent the film from being aired in Sri Lanka.

"We condemn any acts disrespecting any religion," Religious Affairs Minister M K D S Gunawardena said.

"We will not allow the screening of this film which is a sensitive (issue) to Muslim people," he said.

He said an advertisement will be published in newspapers requesting local media stations not to show it.

The movie also drew large scale protests in the country early this week.

Several streets in Colombo were blocked in protests after Friday prayers.

In the Muslim community dominated areas in the east protests were more intense.

At least seven per cent of Sri Lanka`s 20 million people are Muslims.
