Colombo: Sri Lanka will hold the National
Safety Day in Jaffna, the cultural capital of Tamil minority,
on December 26 as a mark of respect for all those who died in
the 2004 tsunami.
The Sri Lankan authorities have declared December 26,
the day a catastrophic Asian tsunami hit the country in 2004,
as the national safety day to commemorate the disaster.
This year`s event will be held in Jaffna under the
patronage of Prime Minister D M Jayartne. A nation-wide two
minute silence would be observed on the day as a mark of
respect for all those who died in the tsunami, according to
the Disaster Management centre.
More than 30,000 people were killed and tens of
thousands displaced and affected by the devastating tsunami
that hit country`s coastal belt except the west coast.
Sri Lanka has taken measures to avoid similar disaster
in the future by establishing 100 early warning towers across
the country.
