Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has given orders to the country’s police chief for providing security to the wife of deposed Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed.
Nasheed's wife Laila telephoned Rajapaksa after arriving in Sri Lanka on Wednesday. The Sri Lankan President then instructed Inspector General of Police NK Illangakoon to ensure Laila’s safety, Xinhua reported.
Rajapaksa has also urged Maldives’ new President Mohamed Waheed to ensure Nasheed's safety.
"President Waheed assured President Rajapaksa that he would ensure the safety of the former president of the Maldives," a presidential statement added.
Rajapaksa is currently on a visit to Pakistan.
