Colombo: Thousands of people have protested
outside the British Embassy in Sri Lanka`s capital, urging
Britain not to support a proposed UN resolution calling on Sri
Lanka to probe wartime rights abuses.

Protesters shouted slogans on Tuesday and displayed placards
that read, "UK, don`t support terrorism. Be friendly to Sri
Lanka."

Sri Lanka`s government sees the US-backed resolution as
interference in the country`s internal affairs and has
organised several protests to oppose it, including the one
today. The UN Human Rights Council is expected to vote on the
resolution this week.

Sri Lankan soldiers defeated Tamil Tiger rebels to end a
quarter-century civil war in 2009. Both sides have been
accused of serious human rights violations.
