Dhaka: Three people were killed and three others injured in a possible suicide bomb attack on a lawmaker in Bangladesh`s western Kushtia district, police and witnesses said.
The attack was carried out apparently to kill Awami League MP Afaz Uddin.
"The lawmaker was talking to some visitors at his village home when the suicide bomber entered and exploded the bomb," a police officer reached here by phone said adding that Uddin was out of danger despite his injuries.
He said police detained two suspected militants from the scene after the attack.
The suicide bomber and a school teacher were killed instantly while the third victim, an Awami League activist, succumbed to his wounds at a nearby facility.
The state-run BSS news agency said the attack came days after the some local leaders of fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami issued threats that the ruling Awami League would be exposed to danger unless their several stalwarts, faced with trial for crimes against humanity during 1971 Liberation War were not released.
