Islamabad: At least five persons were killed when a suicide bomber targeted an anti-Taliban tribal elder in a volatile region in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province Monday.

The suicide attacker rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the car of pro-government tribal elder Malik Abdul Hakim near a police check post in the Bannu area this morning.

Reports suggested that Hakim was among those killed by the blast but this could not be independently confirmed. Hakim was a key member of a "peace committee" formed to fight the Taliban.

The attack occurred on the road leading to Miranshah, the main town in the troubled North Waziristan tribal region.

It came two days after a suicide attack on a police station in Bannu town killed at least 15 people and injured over 60. The attacker rammed a truck packed with over 300 kg of explosives into the police station.
