A suspected activist of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan was killed today in clashes between militants and the security forces in this southern port city.

Karachi: A suspected activist of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan was killed today in clashes between militants and the security forces in this southern port city.

A senior police official said the encounter took place at Ijtamah Gah Road in Orangi town in Karachi during a targeted operation carried out by the paramilitary rangers.

"The suspected TTP member was shot dead in the same vicinity where on October 10 three suicide bombers had died in premature blasts while they were moving towards their target," the official said.

"We had some leads over the case and as we reached the spot, the TTP men opened indiscriminate firing at us," a senior Rangers official said, adding that most of the culprits escaped under the cover of firing.

Separately, Rangers claimed that they have detained 63 alleged criminals including Lyari gangsters and criminals affiliated with political groups.

According to a Rangers` spokesperson, the arrests were made during targeted raids in various parts of the city.
