Syrian official denies sabotage of drinking water

The governor of Syria`s Aleppo province denied media reports that said drinking water has been cut off in the region.

Damascus: The governor of Syria`s Aleppo province has denied media reports that said drinking water has been cut off in the region nor has it been poisoned, state-run SANA news agency reported.

According to Xinhua, Governor Mohammad Aqqad said only two water pumps were damaged and maintenance work was underway to fix them.

He said the water pumps had been damaged by "sabotage acts", and that they only feed three districts, al-Midan, Azizieh and Slaimanieh, where water was cut off.

He said all other places in Aleppo have no water problems at all.

Syria`s state TV reported that Aqqad dismissed as "baseless" media reports that claimed the drinking water in the battered province had been poisoned.

The governor`s remarks came amid reports saying that all telecom lines to Aleppo had been cut off as the city witnesses intense clashes between government troops and armed rebels.
