Peshawar: The chief of the Taliban-nominated negotiating committee today said the banned group`s `shura` was ready to meet for talks with the newly formed Pakistan government`s team to establish peace in the country.

Maulana Samiul Haq, addressing a press conference in Akora Khattak, said he will meet the government team in a day or two to sort out details of direct negotiations? including finalising the venue and date for the talks.

He expressed satisfaction over the progress made so far and hoped that peace efforts would ultimately succeed.

Earlier, a delegation of the Taliban negotiating committee returned to Nowshera after meeting the Political Shura of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in North Waziristan Agency.

The delegation briefed Haq in Akora Khattak about their discussion with the Taliban. Peace talks between the government and the Taliban struck an impasse last month after a faction of the militant group killed 23 kidnapped Pakistani para-military soldiers.

The killings resulted in multiple targeted airstrikes by the military against militant hideouts in the tribal region of the northwest.
The Taliban then announced a one-month ceasefire which was reciprocated by the government which halted its airstrikes.
The government has formed a new four-member committee to mediate with the Taliban`s negotiating team.
