Peshawar: Police in northwest Pakistan
on Wednesday foiled an attack on a security check post by a group of
militants and gunned down one of the attackers near the
restive Khyber tribal region.

A group of three militants attacked the police check
post at Sirband area, located between the Peshawar cantonment
and the Khyber Agency.

When police asked the militants to stop to be
searched, one of them lobbed a grenade at the check post.

The policemen then opened fire, killing one militant
instantly.

A policeman was injured in the shootout.
Additional police forces rushed to the spot and
launched a search for the militants.

Al Qaeda-linked Taliban militants have launched
numerous attacks in Pakistan over the past months, most aimed
at the security forces or government.
