Kathmandu: Nearly two dozen Tibetan
exiles, who had been arrested for holding anti-China
demonstrations in the capital last week, on Wednesday began a hunger
strike to protest against their detention.
The police altogether had detained 34 Tibetans from
different places of the capital on March 10 --- the
anniversary of a failed uprising against Chinese rule in
Tibet.
The police had freed 11 of them after preliminary
investigations and 23 of them have been sent to jail for 90
days under public security act, Bigyan Raj Sharma, police
spokesman, said.
"They have boycotted the food provided to them in the
jail from today," he said adding their health condition is so
far normal.
Thousands of Tibetan refugees fled over the border
into Nepal after the March 10, 1959 uprising which forced
their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, into exile.
Coming under heavy pressure from China Nepal
government has been cracking down on the Tibetan exiles who
have been launching peaceful demonstrations demanding freedom
and human rights in Tibet from time to time.
Nepal Government has been following one-China policy
and reiterated that it will not allow anti-China activities
from its soil.
