Lahore: A Pakistani court on Thursday acquitted
two alleged operatives of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) accused of
attacking former president Pervez Musharraf in 2003.
Musharraf had narrowly survived an assassination
attempt when a large bomb detonated on a bridge 30 seconds
after his motorcade had crossed.
Asif Sohail alias Musa and Abur Rehman were arrested
from Lahore in 2008 and a trial court had sentenced them to 14
years’ imprisonment last year.
They had challenged the decision in the Lahore High
Court which today suspended the trial court?s order and set
them free.
The accused persons counsel Naseer Bhutta had argued
in the LHC that there was no concrete evidence against them.
After the prosecution failed to produce evidence
regarding the involvement of Sohail and Rehman, LHC divisional
bench comprising LHC Chief Justice Khawaja Mohammad Sharif and
Justice Waqar Hasan Mir acquitted them.
