Islamabad: Two policemen were killed and as many injured in an attack by unidentified assailants near the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta on Thursday, officials said.
The attackers opened fire on a check post in Hazarganji area early this morning. They also fired a rocket at the check post. Four personnel of the Balochistan
Constabulary were injured in the attack and two of them later succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
Police in Khuzdar, also located in the southwestern Balochistan province, said unidentified men fired two rockets on the town. The rockets fell on the ground near a radio transmission tower without damaging it.
There were also reports of assailants firing rockets at a Frontier Corps check post in Kalat and at Barkhan town last night. A youth was injured in the attack in Barkhan.
These attacks came close on the heels of a gun and bomb attack by militants yesterday in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan. Two civilians and a militant were killed and six others injured in that incident.
The bomb, which was planted in a motorcycle, went off in the busy Saryab Road area of Quetta, killing two civilians. Soon after the blast, militants opened fire at a Frontier Corps check post in the same area.
A militant was killed in an exchange of fire with security personnel. Following these incidents, security was put on high alert in all cities of Balochistan, particularly Quetta, officials said.
