Kathmandu: Hailing the efforts of Nepal in establishing peace as "positive", the UK has assured continuing its support in training its Army.
"The efforts undertaken by the Government of Nepal regarding the management and integration of the Maoist combatants and the peace process are positive," visiting British Army Chief, General Sir David Julian Richards, told journalists after meeting Premier Madhav Kumar Nepal yesterday.
Gen Richards has conveyed to the Prime Minister that the UK was committed to extend whatever assistance it could in the Nepal's campaign on the Army integration issue.
"Britain is ready to extend necessary cooperation to Nepal including army training and Britain is always in favour of peaceful, stable and prosperous Nepal," he was quoted as saying by the National News Agency.
Gen Richards, who is on an official visit at the invitation of Nepal Army Chief Chhatraman Singh Gurung, is expected to call on President Ram Baran Yadav tomorrow.
Richards arrived on a four-day visit on Saturday and is scheduled to meet Defence Minister Vidya Bhandari tomorrow.
He is scheduled to attend various programmes to be launched by British Gorkha Nepal's Area Welfare Centre in the capital today. On Saturday, Richards reviewed key welfare programmes for the Gorkha soldiers, who have been part of the British Army for almost 200 years.
