US to cooperate with Pak for reconstruction in Swat

The US will fully cooperate with Pakistan for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of militancy-affected areas like the Swat valley, American special envoy for Af-Pak region Richard Holbrooke said on Thursday.

Holbrooke undertook a brief visit to Swat district amidst tight security and expressed satisfaction at the achievements of the Pakistani military in its drive against the Taliban in the restive Malakand division.

The US has provided USD 175 million for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure, especially schools and roads, Holbrooke said.

Peace has been restored in Swat valley and the US will fully cooperate and assist Pakistan in the reconstruction phase, he said.

Maj Gen Ashfaq Nadeem, who is heading anti-militancy operations in Swat, briefed the American envoy on the security situation. Holbrooke also met delegations of hotel owners, mayors and tribal elders of the area.
