Colombo: All schools in Sri Lanka's Vavuniya region that were used as temporary shelters for displaced Tamil civilians have been reopened for educational activities, a top official said on Saturday.
A total of 18 schools in Vavuniya, used as temporary shelters for civilians who were liberated from the LTTE, have been reopened, Governor of Northern Province, GA Chandrasiri said in a statement.
The Governor said that a majority of the displaced civilians in those schools have been now resettled while some have been sent to other welfare centres.
The Governor said the step was taken to provide proper educational facilities to children in welfare villages, adding that around 70,000 children who were displaced with their parents have been resettled in their native villages.
At present, there are 35,000 children who were receiving school education in Vavuniya region.
The Governor said extra classes were now being held for the children who will be sitting for examinations next month.
Meanwhile, almost all IDPs originating from Jaffna who lived in Menik Farm in Vavuniya welfare village have been resettled in Jaffna district. A total of 59,475 IDPs from welfare centres in Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee (Pulmoddai) were resettled in
Jaffna, said a report from the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Resettlement.
