New Delhi: US space agency NASA has likely discovered 'another earth' orbiting a star. The discovery is an important step in NASA's attempts to find life outside earth.

NASA is holding a press conference later today and is expected to make a big announcement about the exoplanet-hunting Kepler mission.

According to the official website of NASA, the American space agency will be holding a media briefing at 9 am PDT (noon EDT) Thursday, July 23, to announce the new discoveries made by the Kepler Space Telescope.

Kepler was launched in 2009 and is the first mission of NASA to detect Earth-size planets that orbit around the distant stars in or near the habitable zone.

In 1995, the first exoplanet orbiting another star like our sun was discovered.

Exoplanets belonged within the realm of science fiction just 21 years ago, according to a statement by NASA.

Today, astronomers are on the verge of finding another planet like Earth in galaxies spread across the Universe.

As of now, around 1,000 planets and 3,000 planet candidates having a wide range of sizes and orbital distances has been confirmed by the telescope.
