Ahmedabad: In an attempt to encourage young minds in the space exploration, a science communicator has developed a do-it-yourself model of Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), which can be cut out of cupboard and assembled by kids.

Dhananjay Rawal, an Ahmedabad-based science communicator, feels like kids in the US, children in India should take interest in science through hands-on activities so that science is spread to little minds in a most modest way.

“The success of the MOM was a watershed moment not only for scientists but also for the general public. Children were the most enthused. We decided to make a very simple-to-construct model of the orbiter,” said Rawal.

The kit includes a cutout of the PSLV C25 rocket, which was used for the orbiter's launch, to complete the entire picture, said Rawat.

He added, “We have observed that children have learnt a lot about the orbiter through this exercise. The model forms part of a lecture series that we take at social gatherings and schools where we talk about the mission and its importance.”

Rawal also said that scientists of ISRO and PRL helped them in designing the kit and due to which his team were able to replicate the look of Mangalyaan.
