Former Ireland manager Staunton fired by Darlington Dublin: Steve Staunton, the former coach of Ireland, was sacked as manager of Darlington on Sunday with the club stranded at the bottom of League Two and facing certain relegation to the minor leagues.

Staunton, 41, who had only been in charge for five months and saw his side win only four times in 23 matches, left following Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Barnet watched by a record low crowd of 1,463 fans.

"It is with regret that we're having to part company with another manager during what's been a forgettable season for us, but we felt we were left with no alternative after yesterday," chairman Raj Singh said.

Staunton, is Ireland's third most capped player with 102 appearances, and won the English League and FA Cup as a player with Liverpool.
