Tel Aviv: Frenchman Luis Fernandez has been appointed Israel national coach until the end of 2011, Israel Football Association chairman Avi Luzon told a news conference on Sunday.
Fernandez, 50, will take up his position on May 1 and will lead Israel in away friendlies against Chile and Uruguay at the end of that month.
Fernandez played 60 times as a midfielder for France and was a member of their Euro 1984 winning squad alongside Michel Platini. After retiring as a player he coached Paris St Germain and Athletic Bilbao. In Israel he coached Beitar Jerusalem for one season in 2005-06.
