Govt nothing to do with decision on Pak players: Lalit Modi Zeecric Bureau

Mumbai: A day after Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram alleged IPL’s snub to Pakistan cricketers as a ‘disservice to cricket’, the chairman of the extravagant T20 league, Lalit Modi, reacted to the statement by saying that the decision was based entirely on the thought process of the team owners and the government had nothing to do with it.

Talking to an Indian news channel, Modi said neither he nor any other IPL alliance ever held the government responsible for ignoring the Pakistan players during the auction of the third season of the Indian Premier League.

“Some teams have still not finished their quota of players and some players could drop out, franchises can choose Pakistani players as replacements or to fill vacancies,” he said.

Modi refuted allegations that the whole issue was mishandled by the IPL.

“I don’t think that there’s any mishandling, the franchises decide on their own. We never said in the first place that the government in any which way nudged up in that direction. So, it was a decision that was taken by the franchises and let’s leave it at that,” Modi said.

All the 11 Pakistani players went unsold at the Mumbai auction earlier this month and Modi said it was the franchises’ decision to not pick them.

“There was no pre-decision. They were all worried about the availability and that’s why the Australians weren’t picked up along with many other players and all that we keep hearing now is one story -- about not bidding for Pakistani cricketers,” Modi told reporters.

Home Minister P Chidambaram had yesterday criticised the IPL organisers saying that non-inclusion of Pakistani players was “disservice to cricket”.

IPL invited flak from across the border as well with politicians, cricket officials and former players criticizing the treatment meted out to their players.

When asked about PCB’s decision not to release Pakistani players for the future IPL editions, Modi said, “We will discuss this with the Pakistan board officials when we meet them and I am sure the Pakistani players will return.”

On Rajasthan Royals coach Darren Berry’s comment that he was keen to pick Umar Akmal, Modi said, “I can’t comment on something that they should have done or they shouldn’t have done. At the end of the day it was the franchises’ decision, we don’t decide on picking up of any player.”

they all were hurt because they were hit hard where it hurts the most. This year they will not get those big fat money bags that only IPL can offer them. There was no love lost for game.... It was pure money honey...

I m really happy that no Pakistan players are selected by IPL, it doest not means that I hate Pakistani Players. Afridi, Nazir, Razzak some are my favourite players. What IPL has done is a wake up call to Pakistan Government to punish respoonsible for 26/11 Mumbai attack, we don`t have any individual target it is just like a protest in front of Pakistan Government.
Hope for the better relationship in future (if Pakistan Starts).
Jai Hind.

It is the perogative of the IPL franchisee owners. The owners and Indians do not owe Pakis anything. We do not wish to even see these names in the press leave aside seeing them in our country. The IPL owners should have chased them out in the very 1st IPL.

Players from Canada, Zimbabwe, Pakistan etc were not included. See the maturity level of Canada, Zimbabwe and its citizens as compared with Pakistan Govt & its citizens.
