New Delhi: Rajpal Singh today said there was no question of him quitting the captaincy since India had put up a better show in the World Cup in comparison to last edition in Germany.
The striker said India’s eighth place finish means the team has improved since they had finished 11th in the Germany edition.
“I am never satisfied with my performance. Regarding the team performance, in the last World Cup India won just one match and finished 11th. This time also we won just one match but we have finished eighth. This is an improvement. So I am not resigning (from captaincy),” he said after India lost 2-4 to Argentina in the seventh-eighth place play-off.
Like coach Jose Brasa, Rajpal conceded defence was the area of concern for the hosts.
“There were lots of shortcomings in the defence. We need to work on this aspect. We lacked experience in defence,” he said.
The Indian captain said the players were on a high after defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in their campaign opener and that had raised hopes of reaching the semifinals.
“The way we started the tournament by beating Pakistan we thought we would reach the semifinals. But we missed the target.”
