Panchkula: Chandigarh golfer Ranjit Singh
blasted a sensational seven-under 65 to grab the opening round
lead in the Aircel-PGTI Players Championship here today.
Dinesh Raghuvanshi of Pune fired a four-under 68 to lie
second.
Chandigarh pro Harmeet Kahlon turned in three-under 69 to
be sole third, one shot ahead of Mohd Sanju, Raju Singh, Raju
Ali Mollah, Gaurav Pratap Singh, Om Prakash Chouhan and Mohd
Siddikur Rahman who share the fourth place.
Playing his back nine first, Ranjit did not look in a
great touch as he missed some easy birdie putts. After his
first five holes, the Chandigarh pro turned the tide with a
birdie hat-trick.
He went on to pick up more birdies on the 18th, fifth and
sixth holes, thanks to some good chipping and putting, and
signed off on a birdie-birdie note.
"My driving was good and I made all fairways today. The
three successive birdies from the 14th through the 16th put me
on the right track for the rest of the round," Ranjit later
said.
"I played a lot on this course and I can say that I
enjoyed the advantage of local knowledge this week," he added.
