Sena spits venom against Sachin again Zeenews Bureau

Mumbai: Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar’s nationalistic ‘Mumbai for all’ comment was targeted yet again by the Shiv Sena as party leader Sanjay Raut claimed that the cricket icon may be great, but can never be greater than Maharashtra.

Rajya Sabha MP Raut wrote in Shiv Sena mouth-piece ‘Saamna’ that Tendulkar is not a true Maharashtrian as he never did much to promote cricketers in the state.

Raut said that though the cricket legend has reached many milestones in the game, but his achievements are not bigger than the state.

The Sena compared the batting maestro with Sunil Gavaskar who it hailed as a "true Maharashtrian".

Comparing Tendulkar to Gavaskar (60), Raut alleged, "There has been no instance of Sachin extending a helping hand to other Marathi cricketers. Forget others, he did not even support Vinod Kambli."

"In contrast, Gavaskar when he captained India, had half the team drawn from Mumbai and Maharashtra. He gave Test caps to many Marathi players including Suru Naik and Zulphikar Parkar at least for one match," he said, while also acknowledging Tendulkar's greatness as a cricketer.

"In this context, Gavaskar is a genuine 'Maharashtrian' and the whole country loves him even now in the same way," the article claimed.

"Players like Sachin have become rich because of game of cricket. Sachin's wealth has crossed Rs 200-crore mark. We expect Sachin to be as 'proud' of Maharashtra as Saurav Ganguly is of Bengal," it said. "Rahul Dravid too is a Marathi player but he is loyal to Karnataka," Raut said.

Thackeray's remarks on November 16 had evoked angry reactions from a host of political leaders as also the BCCI, who came down heavily on the Shiv Sena chief for criticising Tendulkar, saying his statement was just right and nobody could take objection to it.

Thackeray had said that Tendulkar had, through his remark, "left the crease and moved to the pitch of politics" and this had hurt the Marathi psyche.

Earlier, Tendulkar had said, "I am a Maharashtrian and I am extremely proud of that. But I am an Indian first. And Mumbai belongs to all Indians."

Shukla ridicules Sena's latest attack

Congress Rajya Sabha MP and BCCI's Finance Committee chairman Rajeev Shukla ridiculed Shiv Sena's latest verbal attack on senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar, saying the party was only harming its own image by criticising the revered cricketer.

Shukla ridiculed the latest attack, saying, "Since Thackeray has restrained himself from writing anything against Sachin Tendulkar, his newspaper's editor Sanjay Raut, who is also my colleague in Rajya Sabha, has started."

"I think he should realise that by criticising Tendulkar, he is only harming his own party. Whatever he says against Tendulkar will reduce his party's votebank in Maharashtra because no Maharashtrian is liking what they are saying," he said.

"Drawing parallels between Gavaskar and Tendulkar or pitching him against Kambli or saying that he hasn't contributed anything to Maharashtra, I don't think anybody will subscribe to this kind of argument," Shukla added.

The BCCI, however, distanced itself from Shukla's comments and said the views expressed were his own.

"Mr Shashank Manohar, the President of the BCCI, has clarified that Mr Rajeev Shukla has reacted to the comments made by the Shiv Sena on Sachin Tendulkar, in his individual capacity, and not on behalf of the BCCI," Board secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.

Balthakray`s problem is he thinks of Maharastra when there is a need to think about India, he thinks of his Shiv Sena when there is a need to think of Maharastra, he thinks of his own family when there is need to think about Shiv Sena (MNS emerged because Bal Thackray wanted Udhav as his successor while Raj Tahkray was more active and capable than Udhav in shiv Sena). This narrow minded person is losing of his own, by this type of mentality.

Shiv saina`s myopic stance in creating rift beween Marathi and Non Marathi will prove damaging for our country which has secular character. By criticising sachin Tendulkar, even challenging his Maharashtrian identity, Shiv Saina has exposed themselves as narrow minded, communal organisation which is bent upon dividing the country on ethnic and community lines. All like minded people should condemn Shiv Saina`s anger and distrust against Sachin Tendulkar.

Sachin never said that he is bigger than Maharashra and no individual is including you.But remember that India is much and much bigger than Mahrashtra. Please do not ruin the status of Gavaskar as if he was a biased cricketer only for the the Mahrarshtrians. He might have helped them but he always wanted the right persons to join the Indian team irrespective of the state and surely he too is more Indian than only Maharashtrian.

My dear Indians, Can we ask the same question, What thackrey has done better for Maharashtra ? All Goondas never improved the state image, performance, stature or condition. Since we all know Mr. Thackery is a cartoonist, I suggest we treat his statements not more than a joke. Don`t let dividing forces work inside India in the name of cast, creed, religion, language etc.

Tendulkar is not greater than Maharastra he already said but Mr Thackery think about him self, ``I am greater than India``. Firslty broke dwon the all political party in India and raise only two -three political party for National and State level. All problem will be solved.

it is high time that we consider ourselves indians first. it is right to think about linguistic sentiments and rights of locals. but, shiv sena ( used to get my votes ) has a lot to rethink after attack on sachin and office of ibn lokmat. this very mindset has reduced them to 4th position in maharashtra assembly.

Balasaheb Thackeray`s intentions cannot be questioned, his efforts for the betterment of the marathi manus and maharashtra are completely appreciated.. . . Nobody is saying Sachin is greater than maharashtra..SACHIN NEVER SAID THAT.. . . ALSO, questioning sachin`s loyalty towards maharashtra is just not acceptable..Sachin is the top ambassador of maharashtra, QUESTIONING SACHIN MEANS QUESTIONING GOD..

What a shame! Being Marathi is more honorable than being an Indian? Is Maharashtra greater than India? Other political leaders of India do not talk like these morons-not that they are better. What is nationalism, what is patriotism? All these people are going against everything they said and they should stand for,for narrow political gain. Why not encourage Manoos for entrepreneurship or competing in IAS cadre? India can not rise to glory if they continue to fight against one another -they will repeat history of past slavery-well this time who it will be Chinese? Are you proud of Sachin as Indian cricketer or only because he is Marathi? My God, you might even ask him to leave his Gujju wife.
