New York: Top seed Dmitry Tursunov eased into the quarter-finals of the Indianapolis Championships, the Russian advancing with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Marcos Daniel on a day when two leading seeds were upset.
Second seeded Israeli Dudi Sela converted only one seven break points on his way to a 6-4, 7-6 loss to Russian-born qualifier Alex Bogomolov, while American Wayne Odesnik recovered to beat fourth seeded Russian Igor Kunitsyn 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Former champion Tursunov's routine win over Brazil's Daniel set up a last-eight encounter against familiar foe Frank Dancevic, who advanced with a 6-2, 7-5 over fifth-seeded Benjamin Becker of Germany.
The Russian world number 27 won the Eastbourne grasscourt event last month at Dancevic's expense and also beat the Canadian in the final here two years ago.
"He's a shotmaker and I can't take him for granted," Tursunov told reporters. "In our last few matches I've tried to prevent him going for his shots. You have to try to rush him, keep him on the back foot.”
"But I'm sure he's learned a lot from our previous meetings like I have."
Third seeded American Sam Querrey also booked a spot in the last eight with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over compatriot Rajeev Ram, gaining some revenge over the man who beat him in the Hall of Fame Championships final earlier this month.
