Phulbani: At least 13 persons were
so far trampled to death by wild elephants in Balligida
sub-division in Balliguda forest division in Orissa's Kandhmal
district, official sources said.
With the death of a pregnant woman, Sanira Digal (28) and
her 5-year-old daughter Ashalata in elephant attack yesterday
at Pasoripada village in Brudukia GP under Balliguda Forest
Division, the death toll due to elephant menace has gone up to
13, they said.
Several herds of elephant, which have gone on rampage
have damaged over 540 houses in 48 villages and hamlets in
Balliguda sub-division.
The rampaging elephants also damaged paddy and other
standing crops including vegetables in at least 132 acres in
these areas, sources said.
To combat the menace an expert team consisting of 25
forest officials was pressed into service.
