Kolkata: Altogether 650 houses would be built for those rendered homeless in a fire at a slum beside the Biddhanagar railway station here, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday.

The houses would be built by the Eastern Railway Women's Welfare Organisation, Banerjee said.

"It has been decided that the ERWWO would build 650 houses for the affected people to provide shelter to the homeless from the humanitarian point of view," she said.

"I have had a talk with the chairman of the Railway Board and other railway officials," Banerjee who visited the slum immediately after arriving from Delhi said.

"It is a small effort for the benefit of the affected persons who have nowhere to go.

A similar gesture was made once during a fire at Adra," Banerjee, who was accompanied by General Manager Eastern Railway V N Tripathi, said.

Yesterday, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had been given a hostile reception after he went to the spot after the blaze.

Rehabilate affected persons out of BidhanNagar station premises. Extend platforms with good numbers so that passenger can avail it smoothly. Connect Sealdah South station with Bidhan nagar station directly. Arrange for orginating station at Sealdah South and Bidhan Nagar both as Auxilary Station of SEALDAH MAIN for long routed trains. If need, clear the necessary passege. Ask State Govt to coordinate with railways otherwise to make arrangement of alternate land equivalent occupied land for new construction of railway lines. Unauthorised private buildings may be noticed and slums to be shifted.
