New Delhi: An AGP delegation on Thursday met Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh and demanded a CBI probe into an
alleged Rs 1,000 crore scam in North Cachar Hill District.
"This is a serious issue as the money meant for the
development of the tribal areas of Assam was pocketed by Tarun
Gogoi-led government in the state," senior AGP leader C M
Patwari told reporters after the meeting.
Accusing the ruling Congress of having a "nexus" with
militants in the state, he also demanded a CBI probe into it.
Patwari, along with eight other AGP leaders, including
former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, met Singh
and submitted a memorandum to him.
"We met the PM and submitted a memo to him about the
scam. We are also meeting the Home Minister," he said.
Mahanta alleged that Gogoi is not handing over the case
to the CBI because of the "involvement" of Congress ministers
in the scam.
The Centre has advised the Assam government to ask CBI to
investigate the alleged financial irregularities in the
development funds sanctioned by the Union government for the
North Cachar District Autonomous Council.
Union Home Secretary G K Pillai had on Tuesday told a
television channel in Guawahati that the Centre has already
written to the state government advising it to entrust the
matter to CBI.
