Guwahati: Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Sunday slammed the Assam government for its 'populist measures', which, it said, would be disastrous in the long run.

"The populist short-term schemes launched by the government is aimed at gaining support but in the longer run it will prove disastrous," AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary said here.

Referring to schemes under NREGA, other central government projects and "Majoni" and "Mamoni" schemes of the state government providing support to women, Patowary admitted that these schemes have generated support for the Congress but would be 'short lived'.

"Under such schemes small amounts as Rs 5000 is being given as one time payment to youths but in most occasions the money is spent on parties", he alleged.

The AGP leader said the Congress, in power both at the Centre and the state, has taken advantage of various schemes and are providing these short term schemes to the people.

"In the long run and for the next government it will be difficult to sustain and moreover when these youths spend the money unproductively they will be back to square one and in need of money", Patowary said.
