Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) today directed the West Godavari District Collector to sanction an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh to a four-year-old LKG student, who had her eye badly damaged allegedly due to caning by her teacher.

P Manaswini, studying in a public school in Tanuku town, was allegedly punished by her teacher Y Sreedevi, resulting in damage to her eye last month. She is said to have lost 75 per cent vision and undergoing treatment.

Responding to a petition filed by the girl's mother N Jayalaxmi, SHRC Chairman B Subhashan Reddy said the allegations and counter allegations have to be probed.

He directed the West Godavari Collector to sanction the ex-gratia amount to the student, pending an inquiry.

The police, who produced Jayalaxmi and the teacher before the commission today, said after probe is completed and the final medical certificate issued, a chargesheet will be filed. The teacher was arrested on February 11.

Reddy further asked the district Superintendent of Police to instruct the SHO concerned to give protection to the petitioner after she alleged she was being threatened by the school principal to withdraw her petition from the SHRC.

The principal has to be examined and produced before the Commission by April 30, Reddy ordered.
