Hyderabad: A day after Andhra Pradesh High Court quashed four per cent reservations for Muslims in educational institutions and jobs, the state government on Tuesday decided to file an appeal in the Supreme Court.

"We are going in for an appeal in the Supreme Court against the High Court judgment which struck down reservations for Muslims yesterday. We are sincere about extending the reservation benefit to Muslims," Chief Minister K Rosaiah told newsmen after a high-level review meeting on the issue here.

The Chief Minister said the government would take all steps to ensure that Muslim students who availed of the reservation facility so far were not affected by the High Court verdict.

Minister for Minorities Welfare Ahmedullah Syed, Chief Secretary S V Prasad, Advocate General D S R Murthy and other officials attended the meeting.

The government should represent its case strongly in the supreme court because it may be the last chance to give justice to the weaker sections of muslim community. It would be worth if the government make a consensus on this issue. The biggest opponent of this reservation is BJP, the govt and muslim parties should consult and try to convince them that these reservations are for weaker sections of muslim community and not for the creamy layer, even not religion based. Those who have already got reservations, also follow a religion, so religion is no matter for reservation, it is on socio-economic grounds. There are true educationally & economically backwards in this community and they really need constitutional help like reservations to uplift and compete in this century.
