Chennai: With a general alert in place ahead of the Babri mosque demolition anniversary tomorrow, police has stepped up security across Tamil Nadu, senior officials said.

Highly placed police officials said security has been 'stepped up' in all districts of the state, including coastal ones.

"There is no specific alert. There is a only a general alert and we have stepped up security all over the state," officials said.

Increased patrolling and intensified checking in lodges are part of the vigil while presence of security personnel in places like airports, railway stations and bus stands has been strengthened, they said adding vital installations have been given enhanced security cover.

The state police was coordinating with the railways on security, the sources added.
