Balco officials approach SC for bail in chimney collapse case

Korba: Three officials arrested in Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (Balco) chimney collapse case has filed a bail petition in Supreme Court, a company official said on Saturday.

Balco vice president Viral Mehta, AGM Deepak Narang and engineer Atul Mahapatra, have applied for bail after their pleas for the same were rejected by district court and High Court earlier, Balco's General Manager for communications, B K Shirvastav said.

The initial hearing of the plea has begun on January 4 in Supreme Court, he said.

He said that GDCL's project manager Manoj Sharma's bail application has been filed in district court the hearing on which would be held on February 13. Sharma was arrested in the same case, as Balco has contracted out the construction of chimney to GDCL.

A chimney at Blaco's under construction thermal power plant at Korba had collapsed on September 23, 2009 killing 41 labourers.
