Kolkata: Describing CPI-M patriarch Jyoti
Basu as a man who was larger than life, Bangladesh Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday said his death brought to an end
a life of commitment to the people and the oppressed.
"We mourn the passing away of Jyoti Basu. The man
Jyoti Basu, however, was larger than life. He lives in our
heart. His death brings to an end a life lived to the fullest
of his commitment to the people and to the changing lots of
the oppressed," Hasina wrote in the condolence book at the
West Bengal Assembly after paying homage to the iconic
Communist leader.
Recalling Basu's contribution to Bangladesh's
liberation war, she wrote, "With deep gratitude we recall his
immense contribution to our war of liberation in 1971 and the
empathy he had consistently shown for the people of
Bangladesh.
"His departure leaves a great void in our political
life and the hearts of all lives he touched. I pay my deepest
respect to his memory," she wrote.
