Lucknow: Charging its political opponents
with politicising the issue of cane prices, Congress today
asked the Uttar Pradesh government to take a sympathetic view
of the just demands of cane farmers.
Leading the Congress's dharna and gherao programme of the
Cane Commissioner in the state capital, incharge of the
party's affairs in the state, Digvijay Singh said parties like
BJP, BSP, Samajwadi Party and the RLD are out to politicise
the issue of cane prices.
"These very parties had targeted the Congress government
at the Centre over the same issue but we had met the Union
ministers for solving the problems of cane growers", Singh
said, adding that in Congress-ruled states like Haryana and
Maharashtra, farmers were getting better prices for their
produce.
Putting emphasis on the need for an urgent solution
to problems faced by cane-growers, he said Uttar Pradesh has
to take a decision on the issue now as the plight of farmers
has worsened following the "blackmarketing of fertilisers".
Singh also led a party delegation for talks with the
Cane Commissioner and reminded the official of the Supreme
Court directives that allows the state to fix competitive
prices.
The party later flayed the official for "failing" to
redress the problems of farmers and declared that they would
continue their agitation on the issue.
